We got a detailed, up-close look at the new ride coming to Piston Peak National Park!
Disney gave us a sneak peek at the new Piston Peak land coming to Magic Kingdom last night when we got a first look at the Imagineering: Horizons exhibit at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, and it answered a lot of questions.
One of the biggest questions we’ve had for a while is just how well the new land is going to fit in with the existing fixtures of Frontierland, and this massive model we just got to see has certainly answered that question. Let’s dive into the specifics and really see what we’ll be working with!
We attended and shared TONS of big news from D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in 2026, including more details about all the new stuff coming to Disney World and Disneyland.
We were invited by Disney to attend a media preview the day before the convention officially kicked off (it ran from August 14th through the 16th at the Anaheim Convention Center in California and the nearby Honda Center), and we got a sneak peek of a TON of different new things coming to the streaming platforms, movie theaters, and the Disney Parks. In fact, Disney gave us NEW looks at the new Cars expansion — Piston Peak — that’s currently being built in Magic Kingdom, and we’re sharing all those new details with you!
A LOT is happening in Magic Kingdom, and we’re excited about the future of the park. For starters, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin recently reopened with some big upgrades in Tomorrowland, while Big Thunder Mountain Railroad did the same in Frontierland. Disney is also building a Villains land behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Speaking of Frontierland, a big Cars-themed expansion is on the way: Piston Peak. Now, we’ve been tracking construction progress on the project, and we think we’ve seen more PROOF that the land will have some water features, meaning that a body of water will return to Magic Kingdom.
It’s been almost a year since we said goodbye to Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island in Magic Kingdom, and since then, we’ve been following the construction happening in that space that will result in a brand new Cars-themed expansion called Piston Peak.
Now, we don’t have any idea of when Piston Peak might be opening in Disney World, but we’ve been following its construction progress, and will continue to follow it from start to finish. Well, we have a brand NEW update to share with you about this expansion, thanks to some new aerial photos by @bioreconstruct. So let’s take a look at what these new photos show us.
Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, the world’s most popular theme park, is in the midst of a MASSIVE transformation.
The former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island are in the process of trans forming into the Cars-themed Piston Peak expansion, while Villains Land is preparing to rise “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain.” However, those projects might just be the tip of the iceberg, as we have a feeling that another big announcement is in the works!
Way back at the 2024 D23 Ultimate Fan Event, Disney announced that a NEW Cars-themed area was coming to the Magic Kingdom. In the many months since, they’ve revealed that the new installation will be the national park-themed Piston Peak, and will be located within Frontierland.
The area, which will be replacing the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island, both of which closed in July 2025, will include two new rides. While we are super excited for Piston Peak to come to Magic Kingdom, we have some bad news about the rally race ride that will be part of this expansion.
2025 has seen seveal permanent closures come to Walt Disney World.
Some of most upsetting to some Disney fans came in July, when an iconic, day one portion of the Magic Kingdom closed to make way for the upcoming Cars-themed Piston Peak sub-land coming to Frontierland.
It’s safe to say that starting in 2025, Magic Kingdom is about to look VERY different.
“The Most Magical Place on Earth” has a lot planned for 2025. Long refurbishments, massive (and we mean MASSIVE) construction, and new entertainment have been announced for Disney World. Let’s go over these changes and see just how much the future of Magic Kingdom will be impacted!
There is nothing more exciting than a brand-new land in Magic Kingdom.
Disney has officially announced that Frontierland is getting a massive Cars Land-inspired expansion called Piston Peak, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the biggest changes the park has seen in years. We’re talking two brand-new rides, a totally reimagined landscape, and even a geyser called Old Tankful. But here’s the thing: as excited as we are, we’re also nervous. Disney, please don’t fumble this. We’ve seen how game-changing lands can be when Imagineers absolutely nail it (Pandora, Galaxy’s Edge), but we’ve also seen how a highly hyped area can leave guests feeling underwhelmed if things don’t quite land the way we hoped. So here are the big reasons we’re begging Disney not to drop the ball on Piston Peak.
