News: 21 Royal Street, a New Private Dining Spot, to Debut in Disneyland’s New Orleans Square

We have news today of a brand new private dining venue that will soon be available to Club 33 members at Disneyland. But even bigger news — the spot may eventually be available to the public as well!

Will Club 33 Be Getting More Private Dining Space?

21 Royal Street, adjacent to the members-only Club 33, is set to open in 2015. The space takes its name from another address in New Orleans Square.

The first rumblings that we heard about 21 Royal Street claimed that it would be a restaurant. However, Disney has notified Club 33 members via letter that the space will be used for private dining functions, and will be able to accommodate private parties for up to 16 guests.

At this point, speculation is rampant about [Read more…]

Dining in Disneyland: Dinner at the Newly Renovated Club 33

After a 6 month full renovation, Club 33 has re-opened to members and their guests.  The expansion includes a new entrance, a modernized and much larger kitchen, and the gorgeous new Salon Nouveau.

Similar, but much more swanky, Salon Nouveau is sort of like Disneyland’s equivalent to 1901; a members only, no reservations needed lounge serving up food, drinks and jazz. We will be posting a full review about Salon Nouveau in the very near future, but for now, let’s take a look at the new Club 33!

We gave you an atmosphere look previously, but we’ll cover a few more pics of the interior for you today!

The entrance is now located just steps to the right of the old Club 33 entrance in New Orleans Square. The pretty new doorbell includes an etching of the new logo surrounded by a gold toned art nouveau design. It’s located on the side wall to the left of the door.

When you are buzzed in, there is a small reception area (formally the ornament shop) where you can check in for your meal and do some shopping from one of the two merchandise cases at the club.  Notice the bust? She is a piece from the club that was located on the old stairwell.

First Look and Photo Review: The NEW Club 33 in Disneyland!

The time has come! Ever since we told you about the Club 33 renovation in Disneyland, we’ve been awaiting opening night…and now we’ve got PICTURES!! (You can see a history of Club 33 here.)

Heather will be busily working on her full review for ya, but I couldn’t help sharing a few gorgeous photos of what the newly renovated (and MOVED) restaurant looks like now. I’m happy to say that there have been lots of positive additions, and some of the classic touches from Walt’s day have survived. Let’s take a look!

Atmosphere

As many know, the Court of Angels in New Orleans Square was a favorite spot for picture-taking…and just “getting away from it all” in Disneyland for many guests. This area has now been taken over by the new entryway of Club 33!

You can see details and the backstory on this area over at Daveland’s Page. But here’s what it looks like today…

Steps Down to Club 33

Steps Down to Club 33

The look and feel of 33 is now heavily accented with Art Nouveau touches, and the detail starts here on the stairs with this lighting.

As always, Club 33 retains its mystery. Many will remember the old entrance — just a nondescript door with a “33” plaque and a doorbell next to it.

Today, the entrance remains understated. No big signs point the way to this exclusive location.

Rumor: Will Disneyland’s Club 33 Expansion Include Walt Disney World?

The exclusive members-only restaurant, Club 33, in Disneyland’s New Orleans Square will undergo a major expansion in 2014. Disneyland recently announced that Club 33 members will be able to book reservations until January 5, 2014. Now that members have been given access to a Preview Center, we have more details to share!

Led by Imagineer Kim Irvine, Walt’s original vision for the space will be incorporated with new design elements. Changes will include the relocation of the Club’s iconic entrance (the famous door will stay but not be used), foyer, and Parisian elevator.

What does this mean for non-members? The beautiful Court of Angels will no longer be accessible to park guests!

The historical Trophy Room will become the restaurant’s kitchen as it currently uses the backstage facilities at the Blue Bayou.

Vintage Disney Matchbooks Part 1: Disneyland

As much as society has changed, there used to be a time when smoking was much more common (In fact, even Walt himself was a smoker; and more often than not, he’d be seen with a cigarette in hand )…and the activity created lots of opportunities for businesses to promote themselves.

Although smoking is not for me, I DO appreciate the gorgeous matchbooks that used to be distributed throughout the Disney Parks.

Vintage Disney Matchbooks

Nearly every single dining establishment, store, “land,” hotel and lounge had its own matchbook – free souvenirs to visiting guests.  I’ve recently stumbled upon (and won) some online auctions for vintage Disney Parks matchbook collections.  I am completely obsessed with their coolness.

The matchbooks I’ve received include everything from early early Disneyland to Disneyland Paris, to Epcot and Pleasure Island in Walt Disney World.  It was so much fun to go through them and sort out the restaurants and lounges to share here on the blog.

Vintage Disneyland Matchbooks

Because there are so many, this will be a three part series divided into Disneyland, Epcot and “Other.” Let’s start in Disneyland!

Disneyland Vintage Matchbooks

Club 33

The Club 33 match book is one of the more recent matchbooks in the collection.  Not sure that it would be considered vintage, but it’s still pretty awesome.

Years ago, personalized match books awaited you at your table when you dined at Club 33, but when a healthier trend started to spread, the matches were replaced mini pads of paper that looked exactly like a matchbook.  This photo though, is an actual matchbook.

Club 33 Matchbook

Plantation House and Red Wagon Inn

The other three matchbooks are much older.  The one below features two restaurants, The Plantation House in Frontierland and the Red Wagon Inn on Main Street USA.

Both restaurants debuted at Disneyland’s grand opening and were operated by Swift Meats.  The Plantation House served up fried chicken dinners for $1.70.  Meals could be enjoyed on the patio of a plantation style home along the Rivers of America.  The Plantation House closed in 1962 to make room for New Orleans Square.

The Red Wagon Inn and Plantation House

The Red Wagon Inn was said to be Walt’s favorite restaurant at Disneyland.  A lovely table service restaurant, The Red Wagon Inn was the most popular place to dine as well as the only restaurant in Disneyland to serve full course dinners. They also served [Read more…]

Dining in Disneyland: Marc Davis Centennial Dinner INSIDE the Haunted Mansion

I recently attended what I’d consider the most awesome dining experience of my life – eating dinner inside of one of my very favorite Disneyland attractions.

That’s right folks, I got to eat dinner INSIDE the Haunted Mansion.  Dubbed the “Ghostly Retreat,” this special Club 33 event honoring Marc Davis was truly incredible (see details at the end of this post).

Haunted Mansion: "Restaurant" for a Night

Atmosphere

Dinner started out with a ride down the stretching elevator to where we’d be eating.  As the doors opened, we were awestruck when we saw a long table set for 34 in the portrait corridor of the Haunted Mansion.

I literally squealed with delight. It was the most amazing table setting I’ve ever seen. Fresh flowers, gorgeous vases, elegant table ware, goblets to drink from — it was very overwhelming.

Table for 34

From what I could tell, the table was basically a replica of the table in the Haunted Mansion ballroom. Even the plates, goblets & tablecloth looked the same!

After claiming a seat, I joined everyone else in taking a million photos!  Thankfully, we were allowed to use flash, so please don’t get upset with me for taking flash photography in an attraction — I had permission. ; )

Haunted Mansion Flower Arrangement and Table Decor (plus Alice Davis in Red)

Because this was a special event to celebrate 100 years of Marc Davis, we had some very special guests join us for dinner. Guests included Marc’s wife, the lovely Alice Davis, Animator Andreas Deja, Imagineer Kim Irvine, and our “host” for the evening was Disney Historian Tim O’ Day. And as if that wasn’t enough, Imagineer Bob Gurr joined us for dessert at the end of the evening.

Talk about a star studded dinner party! WOW. All of our special guests were [Read more…]
