What Is Going on With the Spaceship Earth Update in Disney World?

If you’ve been to EPCOT within the past few years, you’ve probably noticed that a big transformation is taking place. Or, you’ve at least noticed all of the construction!

The transformation is still in progress and probably will be for some time by the looks of it. Some projects have been completed, like Connections Cafe & Eatery and Club Cool, while others remain a work in progress, like the Moana attraction. We recently got major news from Disney about NEW parts of the transformation as well as some updates on projects still in progress — but we still didn’t get any updates on one BIG part of the transformation.

Back in 2019, it was announced that Spaceship Earth would be undergoing refurbishment as part of EPCOT’s big transformation. Disney said they would be bringing “new magic” into the attraction featuring great moments of human history along with a focus on storytelling rather than inventions and technology.

Disney said a lot of the scenes in the ride would remain but be brought to life in new ways…whatever that means! They also talked about adding new scenes, story elements, AND narration (we really didn’t — and still don’t — want to say goodbye to Dame Judy Dench!).

Spaceship Earth was supposed to shut down in May of 2020, but we all know how the spring of 2020 went — Disney World as a whole shut down due to the global pandemic. The closure postponed the planned refurbishment of Spaceship Earth, as it did many other construction projects around Disney World.

But, unlike the construction projects that started up again as the pandemic went on, Disney made the decision to postpone the development of the Spaceship Earth refurbishment.

With the word “postpone,” you would think Disney would give an update about Spaceship Earth at some point but…it’s been completely silent. Crickets. We’ve got nothin! Is the project still happening? Is it completely canceled? Will it be reevaluated in 5 years? These are all great questions, but unfortunately, Disney hasn’t said anything.

We hoped that with all the other announcements made today about the EPCOT Transformation, Disney might give us just a little indication about the future of the attraction. But, it looks like we’re going to have to keep waiting and wondering.
