Federal Judge Disqualifies Himself from Disney Lawsuit Against Gov. DeSantis

There’s been a new development in the lawsuit by Disney against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and members of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board.

Back in April, Disney announced their lawsuit against the governor and board members, stating that “a targeted campaign of government retaliation—orchestrated at every step by Governor DeSantis as punishment for Disney’s protected speech—now threatens Disney’s business operations, jeopardizes its economic future in the region, and violates its constitutional rights.” Lawyers for Gov. DeSantis have been working to disqualify the judge presiding over the case, and that judge has now stepped down, but he did so for reasons other than the ones put forward by the lawyers.

NEWS: DeSantis’ Reedy Creek Board Hires a New District Administrator

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Disney have been involved in an ongoing battle for quite some time now, and it’s only getting started. Between opposing lawsuits, district board member shakeups, and voided agreements, there’s a lot to keep up with.

Disney filed a lawsuit against DeSantis and the new board of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (previously known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District). Later, in a District board meeting on May 1st, members announced that the board would be suing Disney. Gov. Ron DeSantis Comments on New Reedy Creek Board’s Choice to Sue Disney

The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board (formerly the Reedy Creek Improvement District) held a meeting on April 26th, 2023, where they declared that agreements previously entered into by Disney and the former Reedy Creek Board were void.

This was apparently the final straw for Disney, who was primed and ready to file a federal lawsuit. The company has alleged that DeSantis has waged a “relentless campaign to weaponize government power” over them. And then, in a meeting on May 1st, the new District Board voted to sue Disney in state court — which was apparently news to the Florida governor.

Recently, we brought you a lot of news on the matter. Earlier today, the bill impacting Disney’s Reedy Creek Agreements passed in the Florida Senate. That bill is expected to pass in the House of Representatives and be signed by Gov. DeSantis. Yesterday, we reported on how Disney Springs businesses are worried about how this all could impact them. It was also announced yesterday that Disney is suing Governor DeSantis and current district board members. Now, there’s another update on this situation.

Disney Claims DeSantis Is Waging a “Relentless Campaign to Weaponize Government Power” — Here’s a Breakdown of the Drama

The ongoing battle between Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and The Walt Disney Company has reached a tipping point. What first began as apparent retaliation for Disney’s response to the Parental Rights in Education law (often criticized as the “Don’t Say Gay” law) rapidly spiraled into a hostile war between the state government and a massive company.

After outlining his plan of attack against Disney, DeSantis and his newly-appointed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board (formerly the Reedy Creek Improvement District) granted themselves “superior authority” and declared the previous Board’s agreements with Disney to be void. Disney swiftly responded by suing the governor and the entire District Board in federal court. That hasn’t seemed to dissuade DeSantis, though, and now it appears as though the war has only just begun.

Annual Passholders Claim They Were Misled by Disney

Things with Park Passes and Annual Passholder requirements are changing, but that doesn’t mean the Park Pass lawsuit brought by Disney World Annual Passholders against Disney World is over.

The lawsuit was filed back in October of 2022 and essentially argues that the Platinum Pass and Platinum Plus passes promised “no blockout dates.” But, according to the Passholders, the Park Pass system has essentially created blockout dates for Passholders and modified their contracts with Disney. The Passholders also argue that Disney is prioritizing regular ticket purchasers to make a bigger profit, “abused a global pandemic,” and is “taking advantage” of their loyal passholder fans. So what’s happening now? Well, there have been some big developments.
