To say we’re fans of Disney’s Imagineers would be an understatement. And one of the most noteworthy Imagineering icons is Joe Rohde!

Earlier this year, legendary Imagineer Joe Rohde retired from the Walt Disney Company.

Rohde was the driving creative force behind so many incredible projects at Walt Disney World and beyond, including Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa. Well, if you’re wondering how Rohde is filling his time these days (aside from the occasional garage sale), we’ve got a little bit of an idea. Turns out Rohde has changed his focus from animals, nature, and theme parks to…the final frontier!
We learned back in November that legendary Walt Disney Company Imagineer Joe Rohde would be retiring today, January 4th, 2021.

His 40 year-long career with Disney has included such amazing projects as World Showcase pavilions, Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout!, Captain EO, and most notably, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. His time with the Imagineering department has produced some incredible work, and today he and his coworkers had a few things to say about his retirement.

The Imagineers hide these gems in attractions, restaurants, and resorts. Look up and you’ll find an advertisement in a shop window on Main Street, U.S.A. that’s named after an Imagineer. Or, look down and you’ll see seashells placed into the pavement outside of Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid (maybe by Ariel, herself?). There are so many thoughtful secrets to be found! This Imagineer is constantly delighting us with fun content in and out of the parks. Recently he’s launched a video series about Animal Kingdom AND he helped to design some pretty neat ears earlier this year. Now, it’s Joe Rohde’s birthday and he’s asking for YOUR help — to save the chimpanzees.
Now that we’re back in Disney World, you know that means we’re basically required to eat our way through the parks (for research, of course)!

And over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, after we practically WALKED on Flight of Passage and Expedition Everest with the low wait times we’ve seen, we headed back to Tiffins for a lunch date!
We’re not sure if it’s the ears he designed or his Instagram posts detailing the sources of inspiration behind Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s design, but we think Walt Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde is one cool guy — and we know we aren’t alone!
