Disney World’s average attraction wait times increased across the board this past week, with nearly every ride at the resort seeing a massive increase…with one notable exception at Rise of the Resistance. The biggest wait times jump belonged to this week’s busiest ride, Avatar: Flight of Passage, which saw its average wait jump to OVER 90 minutes.

Disney World’s average wait times usually fluctuate higher or lower based on how many people are in the parks, and it’s usually an overall sort of deal. We often see wait times increase overall, or lower overall, but in this case, we were surprised at how up and down they were across the board. One park in particular has really jumped up in crowds, and we’re wondering if you can guess why.

Many Disney fans have heard of rope dropping. The term rope drop can mean different things for different people, but typically, rope dropping is when you are in the park, past the turnstiles, BEFORE the park opens.

Usually, people arrive about an hour before the park opens to ensure that they are at the rope in front of each of the lands. You will hear a lot about rope dropping on your Disney trip and how it might be worth it. Disney World’s average wait times did see a drop this week from their record Holiday highs. However, drop is a relative term this week, as the resort’s wait times were still WAY above their usual averages.
What does Disney World look like on a sold-out day?!
In early 2024, Disney World got rid of its park pass reservation system for the majority of its guests — those with date-based tickets. However, Annual Passholders and other people with specific tickets still need to make reservations. Park pass reservations can “sell out” on busier days, meaning that those folks will be blocked out from visiting the parks that are “sold out” — and that’s exactly what happened on Monday, January 6th.

Disney World’s saw MASSIVE average wait timed this week, with 5 rides averaging waits in the triple digits, including a whopping 144 minute wait for the ever-dependable Avatar: Flight of Passage.

The Holiday season is one of the busiest at Walt Disney World, with events including Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, Jollywood Nights, and EPCOT’s International Festival of the Holidays (including performances of the Candlelight Processional) drawing in huge crowds. Of course, the Holiday season culminates on New Year’s Day! We headed into Magic Kingdom on the first day of 2025 to see what the crowds were looking like.
