NEW Construction is Happening at Disney World’s Abandoned Hotel

In 2022, Disney World’s ambitious Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, which was both a hotel and a Star Wars roleplaying experience, opened for the first time.

However, the Galactic Starcruiser officially closed its doors in 2023, almost a year later. However, Disney hasn’t abandoned the building that once housed the experience — the company recently shared it would convert the building into office space for Walt Disney Imagineering. In August, Disney filed a permit to begin that conversion for “general construction.” Now, we’re starting to see signs of that construction taking place.

5 Disney World Buildings That Are STILL Abandoned

While Walt Disney World’s four theme parks are often full of guests that make it feel like every inch of them is packed, the truth is that all of them have abandoned buildings right smack dab in the middle of their busiest areas.

Check out the windows!

From a long-abandoned EPCOT pavilion to the husk of a several-times-transformed opening year Magic Kingdom attraction, these structures have been sitting empty for years — sometimes decades. In fact, in my 30 years of visiting Disney World, most of them have been vacant much longer than they were filled.

At first glance, there’s not much space in the Magic Kingdom that isn’t being used for something, especially with the recent closures of the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island to make room for Piston Peak.

When you think of Disney World as a whole, there really aren’t THAT many attractions that are still abandoned.

However, it’s more than you would expect, since you’d assume that a company like Disney would want to make use of every single space they can to bring in new attractions, and therefore new guests, right? In some ways, yes, but there are still several abandoned attractions and areas around Disney World that Disney has done absolutely nothing with. And TWO of them are in Tomorrowland, which is pretty wild. Tomorrowland Terrace is just a restaurant that’s been sitting empty for years (save for Fireworks Dessert Parties), but the REAL abandoned attraction in this area has been sitting fully abandoned for the past 6 years — Stitch’s Great Escape.

NEWS: An ABANDONED Disney World Store Will Be Opening Its Doors for a Limited Time

While a majority of Disney World experiences have returned since the pandemic, there are still a handful of things we would like to see return to the parks and resorts.

Do you know what store this is?

One thing that has remained closed since 2020 is a store tucked away in the corner of Disney’s Hollywood Studios by Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano. It sits abandoned and every time we walk by, we hope that it might be the day for its grand reopening. It hasn’t happened yet, but we will be able to get a peek inside soon.
