Every once in a while a menu change at Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World sparks a flame of excitement for the DFB — and this is one of those times! Our Disneyland correspondent Heather (keepin’ it tasty @DiningInDisney on Instagram!) headed to Tangaroa Terrace at Disneyland Hotel recently — only to discover that the new menu she’d been so anxious to try is basically the same menu that can be found at Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar (also located at the Disneyland Hotel)!
Today, we’re heading into one of my favorite places — the Disneyland Hotel — to enjoy lunch at Tangaroa Terrace.
The counter service spot, billed as “casual island dining”, is a newer addition to this landmark. While the hotel has been around since the beginning of Disneyland time, Tangaroa Terrace opened only a few short years ago as part of a massive renovation.
Fans of Captain Cook’s Snack Company in Walt Disney World’s Polynesian Resort (nope, apparently the name hasn’t officially changed yet) are going to find the place very familiar. Time to show you around a bit!
Tangaroa Terrace isn’t just a renovated space — they built it from the ground up. The standalone spot is located adjacent to the hotel’s three pools, making poolside dining for guests of the hotel a snap.
Enter the restaurant, and you’ll see immediately that ordering your food is going to be an interactive experience. That’s because guests CAN place their orders at kiosks. The concept is a familiar one for veterans of Walt Disney World. But kiosk ordering is still pretty rare around Disneyland Resort.
The kitchen offers the same open concept like so many other Disney kitchens these days. It’s also worth noting that the staff here service not only Tangaroa Terrace, but Trader Sam’s and poolside orders as well.
Indoor seating is extremely limited…but hey, the restaurant isn’t called Tangaroa Terrace for nothing.
Taking a page from the Polynesian Islands, they meld the indoor with the outdoor here. Inside, soaring ceilings and big windows let in plenty of light.

When, several months ago, I signed my family up for the Disneyland “Star Tours” Family Fun Run 5K, I didn’t really think that we’d actually be running. I thought it might be a fast walking, behind the scenes look at Disneyland & California Adventure’s backstage areas. You know, fast enough to burn a few calories, but slow enough to take photos?
So, when my husband decided that the four of us were going to kick it into high gear and run, I got a little nervous — nervous that I was going to miss something cool as we jetted (exaggeration) through the course. At least I knew that I was running for rewards: a cool medal and some fun snacks, followed by my first breakfast at Tangaroa Terrace.

Since the day it opened, I’ve been wanting to check out Tangaroa Terrace at the Disneyland Hotel. I had been by to take a peek, but had not had a chance to dine there. After the guest review posted here on The Disney Food Blog, I was so bummed to hear of a not so stellar experience, that I just didn’t make it a priority.
And then I got an invite from a friend to meet her and her little ones for lunch… I am happy to report that I had a completely different experience and guess what? I absolutely LOVED it. Yes, LOVED in all caps.
Atmosphere and Ordering
We headed over for lunch about 1:30. The first thing I noticed is that there were zero people there. We walked through the empty patio seating area to the front doors without passing one person. My guess is that most guests were still in the parks and that there are still a lot of people who have no idea that this place even exists.

Tangaroa Terrace – Casual Island Dining, and Trader Sam’s – Enchanted Tiki bar will open at the Disneyland Hotel on May 25, 2011!
Opening very soon in the Disneyland Hotel, Trader Sam’s plans to offer tropical bar fare. Menu items will include sweet and spicy Asian wings, chicken lettuce wraps, panko-crusted Chinese long beans with Sriracha mayo, tamarind-glazed pork shanks with green papaya slaw and ahi poke (sushi-grade tuna) with avocado, green onion and crispy wontons.
Did someone say Tiki Bar? Trader Sam’s – Enchanted Tiki Bar will quench your thirst with vintage island cocktails. Served in campy glasses, the Krakatoa Punch (reserve aged rum, light rum, tropical juice, almond syrup and hibiscus grenadine) will have you enjoying “island time” before you reach the bottom. Tangaroa Terrace Restaurant
and Trader Sam’s Bar will open in Spring 2011 as part of the Disneyland Hotel renovation. As the Disneyland Hotel keeps its nostalgic atmosphere, the new restaurant is a tribute to the Tahitian Terrace that resided in Adventureland from 1962-1993.
Interestingly, Disney World’s Polynesian Resort once had a flourishing restaurant called Tangaroa Terrace; and you’ll remember Trader Sam as the name of the Jungle Cruise’s “head salesman.”

We’re headed back to our “Best Thing I Ever Ate at Disney!” series today
I did a post a couple of weeks back titled The Five Best Things I Ate In Disneyland, which sparked a fun series based on the Food Network’s (very cool) show, The Best Thing I Ever Ate. Based on some keen suggestions from readers, we’ll be splitting our series up into different sections: breakfast, appetizers & side dishes, snacks, entrees (lunch and dinner), and desserts & drinks.
Today, let’s talk breakfast! I’ve done my favorite brand of informal polling (i.e. posted questions on twitter and facebook 😉 ) to find out others’ experiences of the Best Thing They Ever Ate for breakfast at Disney. I must say, the conclusions aren’t all that shocking, but they are delicious! Here’s what we’ve all come up with:
Ah, the glorious little Mickey Waffle! I have no idea why these little guys taste as wonderful as they do, but it’s like melt-in-your-mouth happiness as soon as you bite into one (you think I’m being overly dramatic, but I promise, they’re delicious).
