MagicBands are the wearable technology (a band worn on the wrist containing a Radio-Frequency Identification or RFID chip) that connects — or “unlocks” — all the experiences booked through My Disney Experience once guests arrive at Walt Disney World.
A MagicBand can:
- Serve as a Digital Key to enter your Disney World Resort hotel room;
- Serve as your park “ticket” (when linked to pre-purchased valid admission);
- Pay for purchases around the parks (for Disney World Resort hotel guests);
- Enter attraction Lightning Lanes booked through Disney Genie;
- And connect Disney Photopass pictures to your My Disney Experience account.
MagicBand+ will have all of the capabilities as the current MagicBands listed above… PLUS 😉 !
It will offer new INTERACTIVE features to enhance your Disney park experience.
Let’s explore a few of the interactive features that Disney has already announced!
Interactive MagicBand+ Features
A MagicBand+ will come alive with color-changing lights, haptic vibrations and gesture recognition! Disney shares that “your movement enables magical surprises!”

MagicBand+ will feature customizable color-changing lights (in instances such as scanning into the parks) and haptic vibrations that will “let you feel the magic with light vibrations that bring experiences to life.”
Disney has shared that MagicBands at Disneyland may not work exactly the same way as the they function in Disney World, stating that “Some of the features of MagicBand+ will vary between Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort.” For now, let’s explore what we know about how MagicBand+ will function at each Resort.
Interactive MagicBand+ Features in Disney World
50th Anniversary Character Statues
In Walt Disney World, the summer 2022 launch of MagicBand+ will coincide with the Resort’s 50th Anniversary celebration. As part of the celebration, MagicBand+ will allow wearers to interact will the new 50th Anniversary Character Statues throughout the Disney World parks!
You can walk up to a statue and wave at the character (with the arm that has your MagicBand+ on it), and the characters will talk to you when they sense “your MagicBand’s pixie dust.”
With the Play Disney Parks App on your phone, you can also collect interactions with the characters by going to find them all in each park as part of the “Disney Fab 50 Quest!”
Take your hunt to the next level by pairing the free Play Disney Parks app and unlocking special achievements along the way. (You will need to have MagicBand+ to be able to interact with the statues.) By collecting characters, you can unlock Augmented Reality portals to see different characters’ lands on your phone.
Star Wars: Batuu Bounty Hunters
Join the Batuu Bounty Hunters’ Guild through Star Wars: Batuu Bounty Hunters in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Follow the MagicBand+’s light patterns and haptics to find virtual bounties that have been hidden throughout Black Spire Outpost.
You’ll also be able to use the free Play Disney Parks app to reveal your virtual bounty by using the “app’s built-in augmented reality thermal viewer.” Once you’ve completed the mission, you’ll return to “the local guild master.” That guild master will then reward you with galactic credits. (Difficulty will increase as you find more bounties!)
And, as is the case with the current MagicBands, a large variety of designs will be available!
You can see more designs here.
Interactive MagicBand+ Features in Disneyland
MagicBand+ will also be coming to Disneyland Resort, bringing MagicBands to Disneyland for the first time! In fact, a Sleeping Beauty Castle MagicBand+ will be exclusive to Disneyland Resort!
As a reminder, Disney has shared that MagicBands at Disneyland may not work exactly the same way as the they function in Disney World, stating that “Some of the features of MagicBand+ will vary between Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort.”
We’ll keep you posted as we learn more!
Additional MagicBand+ Features
MagicBand+ has not yet officially been released. However, we happened upon an accidental early release on May 1, 2022, and we’re able to gather some information regarding additional MagicBand+ features.
The MagicBand+ is RECHARGABLE! It comes with a USB cord for recharging.
The packaging also states that MagicBand+ will work with Alexa.
Disney hasn’t shared many details about this, but it could mean that guests will be able to use the band to interact with the new “Hey Disney” devices coming to all the Disney World hotels sometime this year.

If you have worn the current version of a regular MagicBand, you may be curious to know how MagicBand+ compares with regards to size and feel of the band on your wrist. The picture below shares the two versions side by side, with the MagicBand+ on your left below.
The puck (which is removable on both) is bigger and more rounded on the MagicBand+ making the overall band a bit wider. The length of the bands are fairly comparable, though the MagicBand+ is a little longer.
This could make it a more comfortable fit for those with wider wrists.
MagicBand+ will arrive in Disney World in the summer of 2022, but an official release date has yet to be announced. That said, we did happen upon an accidental early release on May 1, 2022, and you can read some of our initial reactions to the MagicBand+ here.
MagicBand+ will also arrive in Disneyland Resort in 2022, but an official release date has yet to be announced.
Purchasing a MagicBand+
As with the current MagicBands, MagicBand+ options will be available for purchase throughout Disney World merchandise locations. Presumably, they may also be available for purchase on shopDisney.com (though this has not been confirmed). MagicBand+ will also be available for a discounted, pre-arrival price for Disney World Resort hotel guests and for new and renewing Walt Disney World Annual Passholders.
When we happened upon an accidental early release of MagicBand+, the price of the MagicBand+ we purchased was $29.99. The MagicBand+ comes with a USB cord for recharging. (Please be aware that you will need a box of your own to plug it into the wall.) However, we will keep you posted on the official price range for MagicBand+ options as soon as it is revealed, as different designs may vary in cost beyond the basic single color MagicBand+.
As another design example, Disney has provided a look at a Star Wars design for MagicBand+. (As mentioned above, Disney has shared that one of the new features is that guests will be able to become a bounty hunter in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios and find virtual bounties.)
