Greetings from Disney Springs! Earlier this month we shared the news of a brand new MAC & CHEESE TRUCK joining the other food trucks on the West Side. While the upcoming truck hasn’t been spotted yet, we have been able to sample what we believe to be one of the new offerings!
We’ll be the first to admit we love the new tater tot based menu at Friar’s Nook in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, but as much as we enjoy the tots, we were missing this location’s Mac and Cheese — and many of you told us you missed it too!
We have good — no, make that GREAT — news for you! Mac and Cheese dishes are back at Friar’s Nook — and with a tater tot twist.
We couldn’t stop ourselves, before we knew it we had these new Mac and Cheese items in our hands!
Picture it: A plate full of Baked Macaroni and Cheese.
Flame Tree Barbecue
On top of that, a pile of Flame Tree Barbecue’s Pulled Pork.
On top of THAT, another Flame Tree favorite: Onion Rings!
And on the side? Just a bit of coleslaw to provide a hint of cooling tang to the entire dish.
Well, guess what? You don’t have to simply imagine it — because the fine folks at Animal Kingdom’s Flame Tree Barbecue have made it a reality!
You’ll see it on the updated menu, where the Baked Macaroni & Cheese with Pulled Pork Topped with Onion Rings and Coleslaw has replaced the Smoked Turkey Sandwich.
You’ll notice a difference in presentation, though, from the menu.
Well, I’ll be dipped.
So there I was, walking around Disneyland taking in all the sights and tastes for the 24-Hour Kickoff of the Disneyland Diamond Resort Celebration, when I stumbled upon THIS piece of gorgeousness.
The Macaroni & Cheese Bread Cone is BACK! Well, at Disneyland, that is! And you can find it at the Cozy Cone Motel in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure.
So, why is this such a huge deal? Well, in case you missed it last summer, a little backstory: last August we reviewed the Macaroni and Cheese Bread Cone at Disney WORLD found in Hollywood Studios at the concession stands for the Fantasmic! nighttime spectacular.
And it was quite a hit. Because it’s a HUGE pile of MAC AND CHEESE. Topped with BACON. Stuffed in BREAD. Like this…
However, probably no more than two days after we reviewed it, it was pulled from the Fantasmic menu.
Gone. Vamoose. Finito!
No big drama or anything, just a regular menu change and pretty much par for the course when you’re scoping out food at Disney World. But a major bummer nonetheless, what with it being MAC AND CHEESE. Topped with BACON. Stuffed in BREAD and all.
So when I saw that sign last week, I knew I had to grab it. Lesson learned: far be it from me to let a moment with the Mac and Cheese Bread Cone slip through my fingers. Pay no mind to the fact that [Read more…]
We’ve got some brand new, hot-off-the-presses food news for you today from Min & Bill’s Dockside Diner in Hollywood Studios!
Min and Bill’s Dockside Diner
Longtime home to the Frankfurter in a Pretzel Roll and Italian Sausage in a Bread Roll, there have been a few updates to the menu over the last couple years at Min and Bill’s. There are rotating seasonal shakes, the Jumbo Turkey Leg, and we were even able to get those fun bread cones here for a while.
But now they’ve added even more to the menu with the recent arrival of two brand new artisan Macaroni & Cheese dishes: Barbecued Pulled Pork and Buffalo Chicken Macaroni & Cheese. And I do mean brand new… these just hit the scene yesterday, folks! So, let’s get to it…
These are very similar to the mac and cheese dishes served at Friar’s Nook in the Magic Kingdom, but they’re not EXACTLY the same. There are two new flavors to try!
You’ll spot them on the featured items sign, right under the Frankfurter and Italian Sausage (yep, they’re still on the menu — whew!).
You all know me well enough by now — it should come as no surprise that I was especially stoked about the combo of two of my very favorite foods on EARTH: Mac and cheese AND Buffalo chicken! If ever anything had “We made this for you, AJ” written on it, it would be this. So I dove into the Buffalo Chicken Macaroni and Cheese with Crumbled Blue Cheese right away.
But first, I took a good look at it, and I invite you to do the same…
The Buffalo chicken looks really strange, right? Frankly, it’s almost off-putting. And as a result, I wasn’t wild about it from the get-go. T
he blue cheese was VERY blue, and very strong, while the Buffalo chicken was kind of watery and weird.
It was spicy, at least, so that was good. But overall, it was not really a winner for this Buffalo, NY-raised girl. It seemed like the mac and cheese and the Buffalo chicken were two dishes that needed to be eaten separately. They didn’t go well together at all. Total bummer.
The Barbecued Pulled Pork Macaroni and Cheese, on the other hand, had everything [Read more…]
UPDATE: According to WDW cast members, these cones were removed from the menu at Hollywood Studios. In the meantime, get your bread cones year-round — including the Mac and Cheese Bread Cone — at Disney California Adventure’s Cozy Cone Motel in Disneyland!
Have you ever found yourself in this scenario: sitting in the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater, waiting for Fantasmic! – the nighttime spectacular at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — to begin?
If you are planning to see Fantasmic! (the official show title has an exclamation point in the name, which moving forward I’ll omit for your ease of reading :), you should know that it’s best to arrive well before show time, especially if you are attending the first show of the evening.
So, what should you do in the meantime? Aside form join in The Wave, of course… which you can — and should — do.
But when you’re not Wave-ing, you might as well eat! Fortunately, there are oodles of opportunities around the amphitheater to do just that.
Prior to moving directly into the amphitheater, there are a couple of stands serving up snacks such as Mickey ice cream bars, roasted nuts, frozen lemonade cups, churros, Mickey pretzels, and the like.
Cast Members also wander the outside and inside of the amphitheater right up until show time, carrying items like popcorn and cotton candy, which somehow adds to the festive vibe.
Once you head into the amphitheater, there are two large concession stands in the back, both by the name of Hollywood Hills Amphitheater Refreshment. They have the [Read more…]
— that glorious food that is both side dish and main dish.
Chefs de France
The dish is so well loved that it’s even made its way onto the menu over the years for the Epcot Food and Wine Festival in the France Marketplace Booth. Will it make the cut for the 2014 Food and Wine Festival? Only time will tell!
But for the mac and cheese lover, this dish has everything! Sharp, tangy Gruyère cheese, golden crust, and it’s plenty big enough to share — if you want to! (Confession: Usually I don’t want to.)
But what are you to do if your next advance dining reservation for this wonderful spot is months off, and you’re craving some of this awesomeness, like, yesterday???
Why, make it at home, of course! Because with this recipe, the cheesy power is in your hands.
