News: Same-Day Dining Reservations for Skipper Canteen in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

Ahoy, Jungle Cruise Passengers!

If you have a trip planned to the Magic Kingdom in February, you may want to know about a new limited-time option for booking a same-day dining reservation at the Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen (the Jungle Cruise Restaurant)!

Since the Jungle Skipper Canteen first opened its doors in mid-December of 2015, it has broken typical Advance Dining Reservation protocol for Table Service restaurants by retaining its status as a walk-up only location.

Perhaps in anticipation of one of Disney World’s first peak weeks of 2016, however, a same-day reservation system will be in place that will be unique to the Jungle Skipper Canteen, available from February 12 – 27, 2016. (Presidents Day weekend, the RunDisney Princess Half Marathon Weekend, and school breaks for a few regions of the country combine to result in high park traffic during this time of year.)

The process will be much the same as making a standard Advance Dining Reservation; interested guests may visit the Jungle Skipper Canteen page on the Disney World website. Of course, being outside of those dates right now, it currently only lists the standard operating hours for lunch and dinner. Presumably, however, the standard booking engine should appear on February 12th with bookings for that day only, and so on through the 27th. [Read more…]

Review: Smoky Cheddar Grits at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Welcome back to Animal Kingdom’s Smiling Crocodile!

Now, you may be thinking, “Huh? What do you mean ‘welcome back’? I’ve never heard of the Smiling Crocodile.”

Well, the Smiling Crocodile previously went by a name you may be more familiar with:  the Gardens Kiosk. In fact, several Animal Kingdom snack stands have received mini-makeovers in the form of new names and, in several cases, updated paint colors; spots like the Eight Spoon Cafe (formerly the Beastly Kiosk), Mahindi (which was Harambe Popcorn) and Warung Outpost (previously known as Upcountry Beverages).

In most cases, though, the changes have been in name and fresh coats of paint only while the menus have remained the same. The Smiling Crocodile, however, is one of the exceptions to the rule. Last summer brought a menu refresh to this kiosk featuring the Trek Power Salad and Farmers Salad along with some unique and refreshing beverages.

News: Nine Dragons and Morimoto Asia Celebrate Chinese New Year with Special Menu Offerings

Happy (almost!) Chinese New Year!

The “Year of the Monkey” begins on February 8th, and Nine Dragons Restaurant in Epcot’s China Pavilion will celebrate with special menu items for nearly the whole year. From February 8, 2016 through January 27 of next year, guests at Nine Dragons will find a new prix-fixe option available for lunch as well as additional items on the regular menu.

For lunch, the prix-fixe special will include three courses for $17.98. Begin your meal with spring rolls or pot stickers, then choose from three entrees for the main course: Happily Family (sliced chicken breast, beef and shrimp stir fry), Moo Goo Gai Pan featuring stir-fried chicken breast with mushrooms and snow peas, and General Tso’s Chicken Buns Lunch Box: three steamed buns (basically, these are Chinese tacos) and hot-and-sour soup. For dessert, try either strawberry-red bean or ginger-caramel ice cream.

News: Seashore Sweets on Disney World’s BoardWalk Scheduled to Close February 1st

Do you have your Advance Dining Reservation to enjoy the Flying Fish as we know it for this, its final week? Though the Flying Fish will reopen later this Fall, its refurbishment — beginning on Monday, February 1st — will bring major changes to this BoardWalk favorite. Not only is the location being “reimagined” with a new look, but the Chef’s Counter experience will offer table seating in order to accommodate more guests.

Even the menu will receive a makeover (though Disney has promised that the Potato-wrapped Snapper and seasonal approach will remain. I’m personally crossing my fingers for the return of my favorite Char-crusted Angus New York Strip Steak). [Read more…]

News: Low-Cal Menu Items Now Available at Earl of Sandwich

Many guests visiting the Disney Springs Marketplace in Disney World or Downtown Disney in Disneyland often end up at Earl of Sandwich for a quick bite.

Thanks to reasonable prices, tasty food, and a fairly large variety of options, it’s a popular spot on both coasts. It’s typically fairly easy for just about everyone in a group to find something they’d enjoy from the menu of sandwiches, salads, and soups.

Though it may be hard to stray from favorites like the Holiday Sandwich, guests may be interested to learn that those options have expanded even further with some selections on Earl’s new Low-Cal Menu, also dubbed the “Skinny Earl” menu, featuring dishes that are under 400 calories.

Choices include the BBQ Chicken Flatbread featuring grilled chicken, bacon, cheddar, red onions and BBQ sauce on a lavash flatbread (360 calories), and the Quinoa Chicken Salad which serves up field greens and arugula topped with grilled chicken, feta, quinoa, red onions, fresh strawberries, Mandarin oranges, olive oil and Balsamic vinaigrette (290 Calories). Finally, the Turkey Wrap includes turkey, cheddar, romaine, Roma tomato, and light mayo in a whole wheat wrap (370 Calories).
