Holiday Tamales from Rancho del Zocalo

Isn’t it awesome when we get to enjoy our holiday favorites? In some parts of the country, tamales are a beloved holiday food, and I love that Rancho del Zocalo in Disneyland honors that. Now I know what I’d like to have for dinner…

Review: Strawberry Cheesecake Holiday Cupcake from Disney World’s BoardWalk Bakery

I had so much fun during my recent visit to Walt Disney World.

What’s not to love about Disney at the Holidays? It was such a gorgeous — and delicious! — trip.

Today, I had to share with you a great Cupcake that I waited day after day for at one of my favorite snack stops, BoardWalk Bakery.

Let’s take a look and then I want to hear what you think!

Strawberry Cheesecake Holiday Cupcake at BoardWalk Bakery

See, the “seasonal cupcake” at the beginning of my visit was a pumpkin spice version, and I just KNEW it would switch over to a holiday option during my trip. Sure enough, about two days before I left property this lovely treat showed up.

Specialty Cupcake? C’mon BoardWalk Bakery — Give Us Some Deets!

Upon chatting up one of the awesome Cast Members, I learned that the cupcake was Dark Chocolate Cake with a Strawberry Cheesecake Filling.

For some reason I was super impressed by the crunchy chocolate toppers that were all glittery. Why? Who can say? I just thought they were cool. And that adorable white chocolate star was perfect on top.

Crazy Cute Christmas Tree Decorations!

But enough about Chocolate Pearls that double as ornaments and White Chocolate Gold Stars. At the end of the day, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. (See? That works for people and cupcakes.)

Under a crown of super light and fluffy Whipped Cream (belch, blech, blech), you’ll find Super Dark Chocolate Cake.

And hidden inside — yep, there it is — a thick Strawberry Cheesecake Filling.

The filling itself was only slightly less dense than actual cheesecake. I was really impressed with its consistency.

And the flavor? Well, non-traditional holiday-ness aside — it was good! I’m a big fan of fruit and chocolate combos, and a filling inside a cupcake is always a welcome addition.

Besides, have I mentioned how utterly adorable it is? Really, you can’t not.

What do you think of the Strawberry Cheesecake Holiday Cupcake? Leave a comment and tell us if it makes your “must have” list!

Snack Series: “Frozen” Cupcake at Contempo Cafe in Disney’s Contemporary Resort

It’s Disney Cupcake Time! And for this round of sweet snacking, we’re checking out Contempo Cafe, one of our favorite spots to snag one of these mammoth snacks!

Located steps away from Magic Kingdom — or a convenient stop on the Resort Monorail line — Contempo Cafe is a great spot to grab a delicious lunch or dinner under the soaring atrium of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. If you’re looking for real sustenance, try their Beef Pot Roast or Hot Smoked Turkey Sandwich.

But it’s also a great stop on any Cupcake Crawl! While you can usually find a classic or two in their case, like the Red Velvet Cupcake, it’s always fun to see their new and seasonal varieties as well!

We’ve shown you the Frozen Cupcake before…but this time I get to review it for realz.

Frozen Cupcake

Nope — the cupcake isn’t frozen. Elsa is here in name only.

The streaky Blue Frosting, the Dark Chocolate Cupcake, and the Elsa (or other cast member) Ring and Snowflake Garnish all make for striking visual impact.

Frozen Cupcake

Frozen Cupcake

Yep, when I was there I got to choose from several different Frozen cast members to adorn my cupcake. Sven, Kristoff, Elsa… take your pick. And that special plastic ring is settled into a plain vanilla buttercream frosting that’s — typical of Contempo Cafe — a little lighter than you may find elsewhere in the parks and resorts.

It’s kind of a cross between the consistency of “lard-y” buttercream and whipped cream. You guys know how I feel about frosting, and I’m not opposed to this variety, it’s just not my favorite.

Snack Series: The Mickey Oreo Cupcake at BoardWalk Bakery

It’s time to pop in and see what’s what at one of the best Disney spots for treats, BoardWalk Bakery!

The Bakery has always been one of our favorite spots for sweet treats, but it’s a can’t-miss every trip since it reopened after a major overhaul last year!

The Cheesecake Brownie and Peanut Butter, Banana, and Candied Bacon Pie are some of our favorites! And their Lemon Meringue Tart is probably my favorite pastry treat in all of Walt Disney World.

But Boardwalk Bakery is also one of our favorite stops to find those amazing Disney World Cupcakes.

The Mickey Oreo Cupcake

The Mickey Oreo Cupcake captivated me at first glance because it’s just so darn cute. Underneath all of the fun trimmings, it’s a very simple cupcake — Chocolate Cake and Vanilla Icing, with a little surprise inside — and trimmed with Red Candies. But the garnish, though simple, adds something pretty special. It also bears a striking resemblance to another BoardWalk Bakery Mickey Oreo Cupcake from the past — the Oreo Bon Bon Cupcake.

Snack Series: Candy Corn Cupcake at The Mara

Boo to You! It’s Halloween Week, and the Disney seasonal treats just keep coming!

Today, we’re showing you a fun Fall find from The Mara at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

I love me some candy corn, but when you combine candy corn and Cupcakes? Even better!

Candy Corn Cupcake

So, Disney World has some hidden gems that keep churning out awesome eats that you’d never expect. Places like Sleepy Hollow and Friar’s Nook in the Magic Kingdom, and Landscape of Flavors at Art of Animation Resort tend to be little hot-beds of creativity when it comes to snacks and must-eat treats. The Mara at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge also fits into this category, featuring some seriously great baked goods on a regular basis (like the Chocolate Raspberry Mickey Tart).

And so I give you the Candy Corn Cupcake — with Oreo Mickey Ears, even!!

Mounded high with thick Buttercream Frosting in Candy Corn’s traditional tri-color pattern, the cupcake is trimmed out with orange-tinted White Chocolate Curls for even more visual impact.

This is all piled on top of dark Chocolate Cake. But when you cut into the cupcake, you’ll find a little surprise hidden inside.

Review: Lemon Blast Cupcake at Epcot’s Sunshine Seasons

You know how we love our big, over-the-top cupcakes here at the DFB.

We take ‘em filled with cream cheese, topped with Darth Vader, sprinkled with edible glitter, and any and all combinations of the above!

Cupcakes tend to take some of the top spots in any Disney World bakery case, so typically they aren’t remotely hard to spot.

But there is a little cupcake gem that really hasn’t received its proper due… The Lemon Blast Cupcake can only be found in the Sunshine Seasons bakery case in Epcot’s Future World, and more often than not, it’s hidden on the bottom shelf, well below the croissants, cookies, and muffins.

Here is a small batch, just waiting to be discovered like the “Charlie in the Box” on the Island of Misfit Toys…

(By the way, the Lemon Blast Cupcake is $4.49 and a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan.)

One of our rad readers (thanks, Jessica!) reminded us of this one, and it’s high time to give the Lemon Blast Cupcake a little DFB love!

Aside from the zig-zaggy, criss-cross-y pattern of lemon (!) drizzled over the top, the rest of the cupcake is pretty basic… or so it seems. Vanilla frosting covers a yellow cupcake base.

Lemon Cupcake Topping

Weird, right? The piped lemon gel topping is a little stringy and a little sticky. So be warned. ;-) I’m not sure how I feel about it. Physically it’s kind of gross, but it tasted fine. So, there ya go.

So what is inside, anyway? A [Read more…]

Review: Red (Velvet) White and Blue Cupcake at BoardWalk Bakery

Anytime is a good time to stop by the BoardWalk Bakery to check out the Seasonal Cupcake, and summer is no exception.

Through the Fourth of July, Boardwalk Bakery’s Seasonal Cupcake is a patriotic confection I like to call the Red (Velvet) White and Blue Cupcake.

Red White and Blue Cupcake

The bakery case sign, as you can see, simply states “Seasonal Cupcake,” and it’s not difficult to spot the Red, White, and Blue in the case as soon as you walk in the door.

These cupcakes are huge, thanks to the more than ample amount of decorations on top, featuring red and blue fondant stars as well as an explosion of white chocolate spirals that bring celebratory fireworks to mind.

There is also a small sprinkling of edible silver glitter covering the whipped topping.

Our Favorite, Must-Eat Disney Cakes!

Editor’s Note: The Cheshire Cake Cups have been discontinued as of late Summer 2015. We’ll update you if/when they’ll return (because there will be shouts of rejoicing.)

Oooooh, we’re talkin’ CAKE TODAY!!!!!

must eat disney cake

Okay, okay — so technically, National Cake Day was yesterday, apparently. But since we had so much fun with National Pie Day last week, I thought it would be awesome to start sharing some of my favorite Disney cakes. (I’m pretty shocked I haven’t done a cake post before — so much goodness to talk about!)

So here’s the deal with cake at Disney. It can take many forms… . And we’re going to include a bunch of ‘em! In honor of National Cake Day, let’s take a look at some of our favorite entries into the category of cake!

Gourmet Cake Cups at Cheshire Cafe

I recently discovered Cake Nirvana at Disney. Because, in my universe, eating cake is usually a thinly-disguised, socially acceptable way to consume as much frosting as possible.

If you’re giving me a piece of cake, I’m getting a corner piece, with as many frosting roses as possible. That’s just how I roll.

So it’s always pretty great when a bakery can get on board with the “Frosting is the Whole Point!!” perspective. And Cheshire Cafe at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom has done just exactly that.

With their beautifully themed Gourmet Cake Cups, you can choose from a Vanilla Cheshire Cake Cup or a Mad Hatter Mocha Cake Cup. Characters from Alice in Wonderland are silk-screened onto a sweet round of white fondant and top each of the cake cups. (Sometimes. Sometimes you don’t get the characters. But who cares.)

Themed Cake Cups at Cheshire Cafe

THIS is what you get when you order. Confetti cake. FROSTING. Confetti cake. FROSTING. Confetti cake. F R O S T I N G!!!!!!

Cheshire Cake Cup at Cheshire Cafe

Yep. That’s all frosting on top. There’s no cake there my friends. And it’s glorious. Thick, bakery buttercream that’s so sugary it’ll make you sick. LOVE!

I know a lot of you don’t have the love affair with frosting that I do, but for those who feel the same — you’re welcome! :-D

Butterfinger Cupcake at Starring Rolls

And how could we pay homage to cake without mentioning the original single serving cake? We are talking Disney Cupcakes, of course!

One of my favorites from way back at the beginning of the Cupcake Renaissance is still around and garnering rave reviews — the Butterfinger Cupcake at Starring Rolls Cafe!
