Guest Review: Darth Vader Cupcake at Star Wars Weekends in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Welcome Guest Author Becca C. with an out-of-this-world review of the Darth Vader Cupcake at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — an exclusive during Star Wars Weekends!!

Calling all chocolate and peanut butter lovers! There’s a cupcake being sold (yay, it’s back!) during Star Wars Weekends that is defiantly tempting enough to bring this fan to the dark side.

Darth Vader Cupcake!

This treat starts with a moist chocolaty cupcake. Then as you can see from my half finished version here they pile on the peanut butter frosting. This was an update to the cupcake last year from it’s previous version, and it’s carried on through this year’s event! This frosting is simply [Read more…]

Review: Lemon Meringue Cupcake and MORE at Disney’s Hollywood Studios!

We’re always looking forward to the newest cupcake creations in Disney World. And even though we JUST shared a new favorite Disney cupcake with you last week, I couldn’t wait to tell you about these, too!

As you know, counter-service locations like ABC Commissary, Starring Rolls, Pizza Planet, and other Disney’s Hollywood Studios restaurants, often feature specialty cupcakes. Here are a few to add to your Disney Snack list on your next trip!

Lemon Meringue Cupcake

Thanks to twitter friend Kat Rembacki and DFB reader Jessica Plassio for sending us news of this sweet temptation!

This is the perfect confection for those who (like me) love a little sour with their sweet. In this newly debuted Lemon Meringue Cupcake, you’ll find yellow cake and a frothy toasted marshmallow frosting.

Gorgeous cupcake!

The pretty colored chocolate shavings are a nice Springtime touch! But there’s more…!!

And we’re happy to report that the “surprise inside” [Read more…]

Tips from the DFB Guide: How to Avoid Crowds When Dining in Disney World

If you’ve ever eaten at a crowded Disney World restaurant, you KNOW it’s not something you want to repeat.

Endless lines, deafening volume, long waits for tables (or sometimes even having to sit on the floor at counter-service restaurants)…it’s definitely not a “magical moment.” After all, vacations are for relaxing — especially at meal times!

We know that you want to make the most of every moment of your trip, and that means eating when the restaurants aren’t crowded — and taking advantage of rides and attractions when restaurants are busy. You need stress-free Disney Dining!

Our recommendations will give you a chance to unwind, enjoy a great meal (or quick and tasty pick-me-up), and get you back to the Walt Disney World attractions! We’ve done the meal time research for you! After years of touring the parks and countless meals at Disney World, we’ve gathered tips to avoid the crowds!

Book an early ADR to get a great table without the crowds!

In our The DFB Guide to Walt Disney World® Dining 2013 e-Book, we have a whole section dedicated to avoiding crowds in Disney World. Pick up your copy here for an extra $4 off using code 2013 for a limited time!

With our in-depth DFB Guide, you’ll learn tips for avoiding the crazy in Disney World — and ensure  you have a relaxing and nourishing meal so you’re ready to get back out to the parks. Don’t go on your vacation without these tips for stress-free dining!

3 Awesome Tips to Avoid Disney World Dining Crowds

Let’s get right to our meal time strategies that we’ve included in the DFB Guide to make the most of your Disney Dining without the crowds.

We found Tortuga Tavern empty at 11am during a June visit! An hour later, there were no seats available!

1. Dine at “Off-Times”

If you’re visiting Disney World during a busy time (yes, Spring Breakers, Summer visitors, Christmas Folks, that includes you!), finding a restaurant without a wait will be difficult.

Still, crowds thin after the throngs depart during major meal rushes. We suggest avoiding 8-9AM, noon-1:30PM, and 6-7PM. We’ve found that booking meals for “brunch” at 10:30 or 11AM, late lunch at 3 or 4PM, or late dinner at 8 or 9PM works well for avoiding the crowd crunch. For counter-service restaurants, we [Read more…]

The 2012 Disney World Turkey Crawl!

Happy Turkey Day, Everyone!

Holiday Turkey Sandwich at Earl of Sandwich

Sad to say I won’t be spending Thanksgiving Day strolling down Main Street or awaiting my turn in Cars Land. But that doesn’t stop me of dreaming about all things turkey — and more precisely, all things Disney turkey!

You know how much we lurve a good crawl around here, so if you love turkey, I say skip the fancy sit down dinner and take a more progressive approach to your fall feast with the 2012 Disney Food Blog Turkey Crawl!

Since we know you have many foods to happily consume this holiday week, we are limiting the challenge to only four stops with a whole lot of latitude. However, there are definitely some other favorites that would be perfect additions (Earl of Sandwich Holiday Turkey Sandwich, anyone?)!

First Turkey Course: The Smoked Turkey Leg

There is no way we could even suggest a turkey crawl without mentioning the quintessential Disney turkey treat: the Smoked Turkey Leg!

Juicy, smokey, and big enough to count as a meal (or two), you may reach your turkey tipping point after consuming just one of these.

Disney Turkey Leg

You’ll find the primal treats in all four Disney World parks!

When it’s time to move onto the sandwich course (is there such a thing?) head over to one of my favorite places to grab a quick bite: Starring Rolls Cafe for the huge Turkey Foccacia Sandwich.

Snack Series Throw Down: Two NEW Carrot Cake Cupcakes

Welp, you know I love cupcakes, and carrot cake is one of my favorite desserts of all time. So when Disney smooshes them together, I’m a happy camper!

So on a recent trip to Disney World I was excited to see some additional Carrot Cake Cupcakes in the mix!

Starring Rolls Cafe Carrot Cake Cupcake

First up, let’s check out Cupcake Central — Starring Rolls Cafe — where all great Disney World Cupcakes get their start (or so it seems).

This was a new cupcake in the case on my last trip, and I Could. Not. Wait. to try it out.

Carrot Cake Cupcake Orange side

I will admit I was a little skeptical when I saw the double-colored frosting and Mickey sprinkles on top. That didn’t seem all that “Starring Rollsian” to me…

With all of that color and fanfare, I started to worry that this might be a bit like the Pink, White, and Blue cupcakes — a lot of [Read more…]

Snack Series: Banana Split at Starring Rolls Cafe in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Everyone knows that Starring Rolls Cafe is one of my very favorite spots in all of Disney World. The concentration of unique treats there surpasses most other Disney World locations.

Even though the Cafe is teeny-tiny (no seating inside at all) there are some incredible eats to be had, including several of our favorite Disney Cupcakes!

Banana Split Dessert

But on a recent visit, I indulged in a few non-cupcake items! First, that incredible Napoleon I told you about last week, and second, this colorful treat…

Banana Split

It’s called the “Banana Split,” but there’s nothing ice creamy or “split”-y about it. So I’m not really sure where the name comes from.

Granted, it does have a banana flavor, and it does have some chocolate-ness to it, so perhaps that’s it? Plus, they’ve topped it with a bunch of yellow goo…so maybe yellow goo = banana?

Banana Split Close-Up

Anyway, I’d had my eye on this item for a while, and just wasn’t sure about it. What was it like? What was inside? Finally, my curiosity got the better of me and I snagged one. Here’s what it’s like inside: [Read more…]

DFB Challenge: 2012 Walt Disney World Cheese Crawl

We’re sending our courageous (and hopefully hungry) readers on another crawl.

Not surprisingly, this one is all about cheese! ;-) (You asked for it…and we thought it was an AWESOME idea!!) The best part? You’ll visit mostly counter-service and/or grab ‘n go locations on this cheese crawl, so no Advance Dining Reservations required! (Of course, if you want table-service cheese options, check out our Disney World Cheese Plates here!)

Some of you have attempted the 2011 Disney cupcake crawl and the 2012 Disney cupcake crawl and now it’s time to tackle another DFB favorite…

The Disney Food Blog’s “Walt Disney World Cheese Crawl” Strategy

Gear up for tasting cheese selections on menus all over Walt Disney World. Your challenge is to sample these sweet and savory items, hopefully in a single Disney World vacation.

Follow the crawl step by step, or opt to select the items that you find most appetizing. You’ve reached the Cheese finish line when you’ve visited at least seven locations and sampled at least seven different cheese items.

Remember that Disney World menus have a way of changing, so if you need to substitute out new options for the ones below, we won’t deduct any points! Depending on your level of tolerance, you may want to split this crawl up over a couple of days. Either way, we won’t judge!

Tutto Gusto Cheese

Some of these items can be purchased for a Disney Dining Plan snack credit, so save up those snacks!

EPCOT: Cheese required = 2

Depart your hotel for a morning in Epcot’s Future World. At 11am, make your way to World Showcase! Your first stop is the Rose & Crown pub in Canada.

Snack Series: Napoleon at Starring Rolls Cafe in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

As you know, one of my favorite places to go for extreme Disney cupcakes is Starring Rolls Cafe in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and my recent visit was not at all disappointing!

While I did try one new cupcake (stay tuned for a review!), I also snagged two new-to-me items that I’d never tried before.

I’d heard for months about the Napoleon at the cafe, and I couldn’t wait to finally see what all the fuss was about.

Turns out, the fuss is well-deserved…

Napoleon at Starring Rolls Cafe in Disney's Hollywood Studios

In the case, the Napoleons don’t look all that special next to the over-the-top cupcakes and fancy schmancy desserts. But ya gotta push past the first impression here, folks — it’s well worth it.

When I got my new little treasure out to an umbrella table in the Starring Rolls courtyard, it was definitely starting to show off its sugary appeal. Though I’ve never figured out how to eat things like this without making a complete mess! ;-)

Side View of Napoleon

This next shot shows some serious decadence. The glaze on top seems to be a thick confectioner’s sugar glaze — kind of what you get when you order [Read more…]

Reader Favorites: Best Walt Disney World Counter Service Restaurants

Whelp, it’s time to re-visit one of our favorite topics around here: Best Disney World Counter Service Restaurants!

We polled our readers back in 2009 for their favorites, and things are looking slightly different these days… ;-)

We recently asked our Disney Food Blog Facebook Fans via the Disney Food Blog Facebook page for the best counter service restaurants inside the theme parks at Walt Disney World. Let’s find out where everyone is eating…

Best Magic Kingdom Counter Service Restaurants

Best Disney World Counter Service Restaurants

Winner: Columbia Harbour House
In a quiet corner of the Magic Kingdom’s Liberty Square, the Columbia Harbour House sets the scene for traditional Americana in a colonial village — and steals our Best Magic Kingdom Counter Service title away from Pecos Bill’s this year!

Columbia Harbour House

The decor of the restaurant emphasizes a nautical theme with plank flooring and hurricane lamps. Downstairs, seating is divided into small dining rooms giving the space a colonial charm.

Here’s a Favorite DFB Tip: The upstairs seating area is usually the quietest and offers some tables with quaint views. Brick hearths add even more “warmth” to the dark-wooded rooms.

Grilled Salmon… this meal belongs on a real plate.

Serving popular soups (awesome clam chowder!), salads, and sandwiches such as the Lighthouse (hummus with tomato and broccoli slaw) and Anchors Aweigh (white tuna with lettuce and tomato) served on toasted multigrain bread; and recently adding a Lobster Roll and Grilled Salmon to the menu, Columbia Harbour House offers selections beyond the usual chicken nugget fare. (Although, there are those too!)

Lobster Roll with real chunks of lobster at Columbia Harbour House

Runners Up: Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe, Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe, Be Our Guest Restaurant (lunch only), and Casey’s Corner.

Best Epcot Counter Service Restaurants

Winner: Sunshine Seasons
Soarin’ isn’t the only main attraction in The Land pavilion! According to our readers, Sunshine Seasons gets a lot of traffic too.
