Ode to Disney Dessert Sandwiches

You know we like to follow the Disney food trends here on Disney Food Blog, and one that we’re noticing more and more are the “dessert sandwiches” that keep popping up.

Of course, Disney has seemingly always offered the beloved Carrot Cake Cookie and Mickey Ice Cream Sandwich, and now there are a few more options. Let’s take a look at some old and new favorites!

Whoopie pies

Whoopie pies (cake-like cookie sandwiches with frosting or whipped cream in the middle — borne out of the Northeastern United States) are a huge trend nationwide; and over at Sunshine Seasons in The Land, they’ve introduced a red velvet whoopie pie with your favorite mouse right on top!

The frosting inside is buttercream, not cream cheese, but we’re pretty happy with it either way!

Mickey Whoopie Pie at Sunshine Seasons

Decked out in chocolate chips, this is a great one to try while you’re waiting for your Soarin’ fastpass to open up!

And at the Boardwalk Resort, Flying Fish Cafe offers a Trio of Concessions Sweets aptly named “Out on the Boardwalk”. A highlight of this dish is the Peanut Butter-Chocolate-Marshmallow “Moon Pie”.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Whoopie Pie with Pound Cake Fries

The pound cake “fries” have strawberry “ketchup” to add to the look-alike whoopie pie “burger”. It’s an innovative boardwalk dessert…and delicious!

Carrot Cake Cookie

What is Your Most-Missed Extinct Disney Food?

We’ve been talking a lot about new restaurants and new menu items these past few weeks, but for many Disney food fans the long-lost favorites really stick in their memories.

I decided that we need to pay tribute to some of these famous dishes and want to find out: What are your most-missed extinct Disney dishes? I’ll start the ball rolling with a few of my own!

Fried Boursin Cheese at 50’s Prime Time Cafe

UPDATE –> This one is back!! Woo!! This is, no doubt, my most missed dish in a Disney restaurant. While it’s meant to be shared, you know I ordered one all for myself when I visited 50’s Prime Time Cafe in Disney’s Hollywood Studios!

Fried Boursin Cheese at 50\’s Prime Time Cafe

This is basically herb cheese spread that’s fried and served with fruit and bread crisps. Pretty standard, eh? But that warm, creamy cheese coupled with the sweet fresh fruit was the perfect starter!

Maui Scalloped Potatoes at ‘Ohana

There have been several appetizer changes at ‘Ohana in the past several years, but the most devastating has to be the switch from scalloped potatoes to noodles. (You can read the whole, sad story here…in fact, please do, because I’m uncharacteristically funny in that blog post and it will change your whole perception of me, I promise.)

RIP Scalloped Potatoes (photo courtesy Brett Young)

Meyer Lemon Curd Dessert at Jiko

You know I love Lemon Curd, so to have an entire dessert based around the stuff at Jiko in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge was quite a find. And when they added [Read more…]

Snack Series: Peanut Butter Cup Cupcake at Main Street Bakery

I’ll admit right here at the beginning that I don’t usually LURVE the cupcakes sold at the Main Street Bakery in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. They often include dry cake and gritty, too-sugary frosting, so they’re not really even worth eating a lot of the time.

BUT!

I had a cupcake at the Main Street Bakery this week that knocked my proverbial socks off! And I’m SO excited to share it with you!

Peanut Butter Cup Cupcake

This peanut butter cup cupcake was off. the. charts. Many of you may remember when I reviewed a peanut butter chocolate cupcake at the Boardwalk Bakery last year, and deemed it my new favorite Disney cupcake. Well, this one just took [Read more…]

Super Bowl Eats in Disney World

Lines to get in on Game Day

While you may immediately think of chicken wings (hubba hubba!) at ESPN Club on the Boardwalk for Sunday’s big game, there are plenty of other things going on in Disney World this coming Sunday!

If you’re lucky enough to be in Disney World this weekend, check out your options, my friends…

ESPN Club

The ESPN Club at the Boardwalk is adding outdoor bleacher seating and some big screen TVs for the folks who don’t make it inside the restaurant (the line is always around the block on this one!).

ESPN Wide World of Sports

The mecca for sports in Disney World will be ready for an influx this weekend! The ESPN Wide World of Sports Grill will be open throughout the evening. And over at the Welcome Center, Disney World guests can watch the game on the Jumbotron and dine on wings, nachos, and drinks from two different bars. Watching is free, eating/drinking is not.

Disney Resort Restaurant Menus

But if you’re like me and you can’t be talked out of chicken wings and nachos, a few of the Disney Resort dining locations are adding some of your favorite game-day snacks to their menus on Sunday!!

All-Star Resorts

The All-Stars will add chicken wings and nachos to their [Read more…]

Halloween Treats in Walt Disney World

Halloween treats continue to materialize around Walt Disney World in preparation for the fun this Fall. We reported on a few a couple of weeks ago, and Heather showcased some in Disneyland on Thursday; but there are even more to enjoy during this spooky season!

Main Street Bakery

Like last year, the Main Street Bakery has created some inventive goodies to celebrate the season.

New for this year’s Halloween season are a chocolate-covered Mummy Cookie and a Graveyard Cupcake.

Mummy Cookie

The Mummy Cookie is actually a sugar cookie, though it looks like gingerbread at first glance due to the shape. It’s milk chocolate covered, then “wrapped” with [Read more…]

Treats From The Mini-Guide: Banana Bread Pudding

The brand new Disney Food Blog Mini-Guide to Magic Kingdom Snacks has so many tempting goodies to share, including over 70 snacks available in the Magic Kingdom.

I recommend putting this dose of southern sweetness at the top of your list. It’s Banana Bread Pudding from the Main Street Bakery, and it’s definitely worth a try. ;-)

The muffin-like top has the consistency of coffee-cake or strudel, and is encrusted with sugar crystals. Inside, the fresh taste of banana sweetens each bite. When it’s fresh out of the oven, the [Read more…]

Disney Ice Cream Gallery

July is National Ice Cream Month!!!

And since Sunday was National Ice Cream Day, we’ve put together a gallery of some of our favorite chilly treats from Disney parks and resorts! (Yes, you have permission to have ice cream for breakfast.)

We know we’re not covering everything, and we’d love it if you would leave us a comment mentioning your favorite ice cream-based dessert in a Disney restaurant. Can’t wait to find out what your choices are! :-)

So now, without further ado, here’s where to go to get some of our favorite sweet-cold treats in our favorite theme parks!

The Plaza Ice Cream Sundae

Scoops of vanilla ice cream drizzled with hot fudge is then covered in whipped cream when you order this Plaza Ice Cream Sundae. There’s not just one, but many crowning cherries on this divine treat.  And that’s all before you get to the crunch of a delicious waffle bowl (if you even make it that far…we didn’t)!

Okay, it’s served in a plastic bowl, which makes it a little less decadent but the crispy waffle bowl will make up for the lack of glassware. Got spare time while waiting curb-side for the parade? Grab one of these little beauties before staking out your piece of pavement! (Or, better yet, let someone else stake it out for you, then head over to the Main Street Ice Cream Parlor to snag one of your own.)

Location: Main Street Ice Cream Parlor

Plaza Ice Cream Parlor Sundae

And don’t forget to pick up this little favorite at the Plaza, too! A Mickey Ear ice cream cone!

Mickey Ice Cream Cone

Dole Whip Float

This is practically a food staple at WDW. Hey, it’s a daily fruit serving, right?! The Dole Whip float is soft serve treat with pineapple juice and should be on your Magic Kingdom touring plan.

No visit to Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom is complete without a Dole Whip. Before your flight on Aladdin’s Magic Carpets, sit for a spell and give your taste buds a sensational journey!

Location: Aloha Isle and Sunshine Tree Terrace

Disney World Aloha Isle Dole Whip Float

Kitchen Sink Sundae

It’s everything but the kitchen sink! This must-share, ginormous dessert begins with [Read more…]
