Can you believe we’re already a full month into 2021?
We’re taking a look back at January in Disney World. This was a newsy month and frankly, there were a lot of things we just didn’t see coming! Here are the five most unexpected things that happened in Disney World last month!Â
WHEW! January was FULL of news!

Cinderella Castle
We’ve had about a year’s worth of news in just one month, with grand openings, festival news, and more. Back in December we rounded up the biggest news of the month, so we’re back in January to explore the 14 biggest announcements, changes, and most exciting things from this past month!
When Disney World reopened in July of 2020, there were some pretty MAJOR changes in place. These include mask mandates, physical distancing guidelines, the cancelation of fireworks, parades, and character meet and greets, and the temporary suspension of FastPass+ and the Disney Dining Plan, just to name a few (not to mention the parks reopened with a freshly-painted pink castle!).
Since then, however, there have only been MORE big changes that could have major impacts on your upcoming Disney World vacation. Some of the guidelines that were in effect last summer are no longer the case in 2021 while others have changed since inception! Let’s take a look at some of the biggest changes in Disney World SINCE July 11th, 2020!
Like many people, we were pretty happy to say goodbye to 2020 and hello to 2021. It’s a brand new year!
And it seems Disney was eagerly anticipating the New Year, too, because the company has made a TON of announcements in the first month of 2021 — like, enough to last us all year! And it’s only JANUARY! And we’re still just getting used to Park Hopping being back at Disney World again!
Throughout 2020 and even some of 2021, a lot of Disney news was about park closures, and updates on restaurants and resorts that have remained closed or have delayed their re-openings.

France Pavilion Expansion
But, this week, the Disney news was a bit different. Instead of looking at the past or things that are closed, we got TONS of sneak peeks and info about things that will be OPENING in the future. Want to see the rooms at the Star Wars hotel? How about a look at Tom Holland’s role in the upcoming Avengers Campus? Or a walk inside the new Ratatouille area? We’ve got all that and more!
When Disney World reopened in 2020, several things remained closed or unavailable, including LOTS of live entertainment shows.

Festival of the Lion King theater
Slowly, some things have come back, including the Frozen Sing-Along show in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. When the massive entertainment layoffs were announced, however, we thought it might be a while before we saw some of our other favorite shows return. But now we’ve got some HUGE NEWS! The Festival of the Lion King show will be returning to Disney’s Animal Kingdom soon!
Lately, due to social distancing measures, it’s become a regular occurrence that ride lines at Disney World zigzag in weird and wonky directions!
From waiting inside a restaurant to go on Peter Pan’s Flight to queuing up at Muppet*Vision 3D for Rise of the Resistance, we never know where we might end up! Today in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the line for Kilimanjaro Safaris took us on a wistful stroll down memory lane, to the outdoor queue space at the Festival of the Lion King!Â
Trying to decide which parks you might want to bypass on your next Disney World vacation? We’re here to help!
Since the Disney World parks welcomed back guests in July 2020, we’ve noticed a ton of changes. From crowd levels to entertainment offerings and more, you might be wondering what exactly you’re in for on your next visit!
The global health crisis has rattled the entertainment industry in a very serious way.
The Disney Parks are not excluded. With Disneyland remaining closed until further notice and many offerings (including some live entertainment) on hiatus for the foreseeable future in Disney World, Disney announced that 28,000 Cast Members would be laid off.
