2023 is a BIG year of changes for Disney World!
New additions are coming to EPCOT and Magic Kingdom, and we’re also getting some major updates at the hotels.
Ahh January, it’s an interesting time to visit Disney World!
The holiday season is over, and the crowds start to dwindle a bit after the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is finished. The weather is chilly, the Festival of the Arts kicks off…oh, and there are LOTS of refurbishments! Typically this winter season is a good time for Disney to temporarily close and update attractions, but this January, they’re adding a transportation option to that list.
The new year means new changes at Disney World!
The Disney parks are constantly changing and evolving to add new attractions or restaurants like TRON Lightcycle Run in Magic Kingdom and Roundup Rodeo BBQ in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. So what changes can you expect if you’re visiting Disney World in January 2023? These may be a bigger deal than you think!
There’s one word that many Disney fans dread — refurbishment.
Many rides go under refurbishment throughout the year so that Disney can make sure that everything is in pristine condition for when guests ride. whether the closure is only for a few days or for a few months. Most of the time, ride refurbishments are quite short. But sometimes, they are quite lengthy, like the one happening with Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
UPDATE: This refurbishment no longer appears on the Disneyland Resort calendar and appears to have been canceled for the time being. Check below for the latest updates.
Have you ever been to Avengers Campus?
It’s the newest land in Disney California Adventure and it’s the perfect spot for any Marvel fan! You get to step into the world of the Avengers and meet new characters, ride with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and eat food the size of your face! But if you were hoping to go on the Spider-Man attraction, you might be out of luck.
It’s completely normal for things to close in Disney World!
What do we mean? Well, Disney World rides, attractions, shows, and hotel rooms often close temporarily to get refurbished and fixed up. Sometimes it’s routine maintenance, sometimes it’s to fix something that’s broken, and sometimes it’s a complete refresh. (Like with many of the hotel room updates we’ve seen recently!) Now, a popular Disney World restaurant has closed for a short refurbishment.
If you’re looking for unique entertainment, you’ll want to fast-walk over to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
A stage show themed after our favorite fish? They’ve got that. Tumbling monkeys? YUP, they have that too. Characters flying in the sky? That’s also a thing. And, of course, Animal Kingdom also has…you guessed it — (real) animals. But next month, one animal show will be closing for a short refurbishment.
Disneyland Resort has been getting some well-deserved TLC!

Sleeping Beauty Castle
Pirates of the Caribbean and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree recently underwent refurbishments, and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel opened its own dedicated entrance into Disney California Adventure. But it looks like the resort’s renovations aren’t over yet, as yet another ride will be closing for refurbishments next month.
These days, it can sometimes feel like Disney rides are closing left, right, and center!
No, don’t worry, most of them are not closing PERMANENTLY. Some attractions have just been shutting down for a little while to get general maintenance. We’ve seen it happen recently with several fan-favorites at Disney World, and multiple rides at Disneyland Resort have had scheduled refurbishments as well. Today, ANOTHER popular ride is closing for a little while!
